"And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance" (Acts 2:4).Speaking in tongues is the experience Christians undergo during prayer or some other time where they suddenly start speaking in different languages. It is an emotional experience where the Holy Spirit prays through the person. Speaking in tongues is a visible sign that a person is baptized by the Holy Spirit.
I personally witnessed a child, who wasn't even a teenager yet, start speaking in tongues. A Christian would understand the situation because it is explainable by Christian principles. An atheist, however, is posed with the question: is the child faking it or is it really God working in the child? Listening to the child, I could hear a complex and unique language that could not be faked so easily. If in fact he was faking it, that means that all the other people who were speaking in tongues in prayer were also faking it.
Let us say, for example, that I decided to join the bandwagon and faked speaking in tongues too. If I was faking it, I would know that everyone else was faking it too. Thus, the community of the fakers would all know that they were all faking it. Well, then, who are they trying to trick or who are they faking it in front of? The whole purpose in faking is to trick or manipulate someone into believe that which you are pretending to do.
If everyone knows that the pretense is not true, then there is no purpose in pretending. How do children and teenagers start speaking in tongues if no one has taught them how to speak in tongues? There is only one answer: God.
